Athletic Update for Parents

Greetings ELH Community,

Here is a quick update on athletics for this 2020-21 school year:

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued guidance of when competition is allowable based on the “Tier” system for each sport. You can view the official release here:

As of January 13th, the CIF has placed water polo (boys and girls) in Season 2 and switched Swim & Dive into Season 1. Given that both Swim and Cross Country are allowable in the “Purple Tier”, the CIF San Diego Section has decided to tentatively start their season on February 1. Please note that schools and district are allowed to “opt out”. If the “Stay at Home” order continues to be in place, that date could get pushed back or cancelled. You can read the official statement from the San Diego CIF here:

The Sweetwater District will be having a Board Meeting next week to determine our participation in both sports. I will send out another email letting you know what the district decided and when we will doing athletic clearances (if applicable). In the meantime, if you plan on participating in Cross Country or Swim, please go to and register for cross country or swim (only). If you registered earlier in the year, your registration is incomplete as there is an additional COVID waiver that will need to be printed and signed (by hand). Please note that we will need an updated physical as they are only good for 365 days and need to be valid through the duration of the season. Also, please contact your coach so you can get on their information distribution list. This is a fluid situation that can change quickly.

Cross Country: David Koopman (
Swim & Dive: Steve Wiggs (

Lastly, on campus workouts are still permissible only for Season 1 sports as we have done prior to Winter Break. I do not have a date of when Season 2 sports will be able to begin workouts at this time. The official District update from January 15th from the district can be accessed here:
